The national Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award is designed to recognize those individuals and corporations who have been instrumental in the development of Scouting for rural, urban, and suburban youth who often face challenging barriers. This award recognizes “unsung heroes,” those who do exceptional service for disadvantaged youth.

The mission of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. and Character Luncheon is to secure community resources in support of the Scouting program for at-risk youth and to provide experiences that develop self-esteem, character values, and living skills, thereby enhancing the lives of young people in disadvantaged areas of our community.

The 2023-2024 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award recipients were Liz Minyard Lokey, Susan Harris, and Kent Montgomery.

Meet Brandon Smith…

Where does the money go?

Funds raised at the Whitney M. Young Jr. & Character Luncheon support the Trevor Rees-Jones ScoutReach Program. This unique program is Circle Ten Council’s commitment to remove any barriers that might keep a young person from joining Scouting regardless of their circumstances. ScoutReach can provide anything from camp scholarships, uniforms, handbooks, transportation, and even leadership of a Scout unit.

What is ScoutReach?

ScoutReach provides youth with an opportunity to try NEW THINGS, provide SERVICE to others, build SELF CONFIDENCE, and reinforce ETHICAL STANDARDS.

25% of our overall budget is spent in support of youth who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford Scouting.
