For Mason, Scouting became about far more than the adventures people usually talk about. While the program offered unforgettable experiences—from whitewater rafting to scuba diving—it was the friendships, leadership opportunities, and behind-the-scenes moments that made the biggest impact.
More Than The Adventure
There aren’t many programs that offer whitewater rafting in West Virginia while also providing ocean scuba diving, mountain climbing, robot building, and shotgun shooting. But these thrills are not the reason I stayed in Scouts and became so involved. Instead, I found lifelong friends while enjoying the things that aren’t advertised: the dance parties at NYLT, participating in OA ceremonies, taking up leadership positions, and building trails during high adventures.
