Stewards of the Land and the Mission
For Ranger Jay Hummel, Scouting is a calling to care for both people and the land. His days are filled with the quiet, essential work of maintaining and preserving the camp so that every Scout can experience the outdoors. But beyond the tasks, his “why” comes from a deeper place: a belief in stewardship, service, and the joy of giving others a place to grow in nature.
I strongly believe in the mission of serving and caring for the land. I believe it’s our job to be stewards of what was created for us, and I believe in the mission that Scouting teaches our youth.
As a Ranger, your hands are tied directly to taking care of the land, trails, animals, and scouts that visit the camp. Through our actions, they see what it means to be a servant of the land and of the people. Every day we trim, cut, plant, paint, repair, build, clean, and mend anything in camp that needs attention.
Each night, when I’m tired and ready for rest, I sleep with a smile and a full heart, knowing the work I do makes a difference. That is why I do this. It gives me meaning, and it gives our Scouts -young and old- a place to come and enjoy nature.
